New Torit mayor sworn in, tasked with improving security

Authorities in Eastern Equatoria state on Friday swore in Eddy William Ponsiano Bolye as the new mayor of Torit, the state capital, replacing Oyito Baptist Soforonio in a leadership change officials said was aimed at improving governance and public services.

Bolye, who was appointed on June 3, takes over at a time when local authorities face challenges related to security, service delivery and social cohesion.

Speaking after taking the oath of office at the Eastern Equatoria State Secretariat Hall, Bolye pledged to promote unity among communities and support ongoing peace efforts in the state.

“Today is a significant day for Torit and all of Eastern Equatoria State,” he said. “We will continue our pursuit of peace and work together for the greater good.”

Deputy Governor Karlo Andrew Akwo, representing the SPLM-IO, said the new mayor’s administration should ensure equal treatment for all residents and visitors in the state capital.

“As we move toward elections planned for December 2026, collaboration among political parties will be essential,” Akwo said, adding that addressing challenges facing young people would be important for maintaining security and stability.

Governor Louis Lobong Lojore said the change in leadership followed public calls for improved performance and urged residents to support the new mayor.

“The decision to change leadership was necessary,” Lobong said. “Your primary mission is to ensure the security and stability of Torit and make sure all residents feel safe.”

Officials said the new mayor would be expected to focus on security, service delivery and community relations in the municipality.
