The Government of Warrap State has strongly condemned the killing of Ustaz Michael Majok Madut Lual, a teacher and graduate of agricultural studies, who was shot dead in the Western Bahr el Ghazal State capital, Wau, on Monday in what state officials described as a targeted attack.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj, Warrap State Minister of Information William Wol Mayom confirmed the incident and expressed the state’s “deepest and most profound condemnation” over the killing of Majok, whom he described as a son of the Apuk Giir Community.
According to Wol, the deceased was walking with two colleagues along the eastern bank of Wau Town at about 3:00 p.m. when armed men riding a motorcycle approached them. He said that the attackers selectively targeted and shot Majok before fleeing the scene.
The minister further alleged that the assailants were members of the Manal Wau Community, although the claim has not been independently verified and authorities in Western Bahr el Ghazal State have not publicly confirmed the identity of the suspects.
Majok was a graduate in agriculture from the Catholic University in Wau and was serving as a teacher at Puon-tok Secondary School in Wau Town when he was killed.
Warrap State extended its condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, colleagues, students, and the wider education community, while urging residents to remain calm and avoid acts of retaliation.
“The governments of Warrap and Western Bahr el Ghazal states shall work collectively to put an end to the sporadic attacks linked to the Manyang border dispute and specifically address the worrying targeting of innocent members of the Apuk Giir community living in Wau Town,” Wol said.
The minister added that the administration of Warrap State Governor Bol Wek Agoth remains committed to implementing resolutions reached during the inter-state security meeting on the Manyang border crisis held on 24 June 2026. He said the agreements were aimed at restoring peace and strengthening relations between the communities of Marial Wau and Apuk Giir.
Efforts to obtain a response from the Western Bahr el Ghazal State Government were unsuccessful. Radio Tamazuj contacted the state’s information minister, but he ended the phone call before commenting on the incident.
Police have not yet announced any arrests or released an official statement on the killing. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
