Police in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State are investigating a man accused of possessing counterfeit U.S. dollar banknotes.
Police spokesperson Lt. Col. Madut Ngong Aleu told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that officers arrested Akol Mou Wol, 38, on July 14 after he was allegedly found with counterfeit U.S. currency with a face value of $300.
“The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested the suspect after he was found in possession of counterfeit U.S. dollar banknotes worth $300,” Ngong said. “Investigations are continuing to establish how he obtained the notes, where they originated and whether other people were involved.”
Ngong said the suspected counterfeit notes had been sent to Wau, the capital of neighboring Western Bahr el Ghazal State, for verification as part of the investigation.
He said the suspect would be brought before court once investigators complete their inquiries.
Garang Akok, a lawyer based in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, said South Sudan’s Penal Code Act, 2008, criminalizes the possession, use and circulation of counterfeit currency.
“Using or dealing in counterfeit banknotes is prohibited under Section 357 of the Penal Code Act, 2008,” Akok said.
