Morobo County to prioritize security, socio-economic improvements

The authorities in Central Equatoria State’s Morobo County on Saturday said improving the socio-economic structures and security stability are top priorities for the people.

Speaking on Saturday during celebrations marking the 34th anniversary of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in Morobo Town, Joseph Mawa, Morobo County commissioner, assured the public that improving security, health, education, and economic empowerment are top priorities of the local administration.

“As the commissioner of Morobo County, we shall work together in strengthening peace and stability, economic empowerment, education reforms, health sector improvement, and clean water sustainability,” he said. “May this celebration renew our hope, strengthen our unity, and inspire us to build a peaceful Morobo County.”

For her part, Dawa Elizabeth, Chairlady of the Morobo County Women Association, highlighted the lack of sufficient medicines in hospitals and the poor learning environment for children as major challenges that need addressing.

“Commissioner of Morobo County, we as women are suffering because there are no drugs in the hospital. We do not have the money to buy drugs, and our children are dying every day,” she said. “We also want the schools to be rehabilitated. We have soldiers here, but there is no school for their children because paying the children’s school fees is a big challenge for them and for us as women.”

Meanwhile, Rev. Kenyi Abiaza, General Secretary of the Sudan Pentecostal Church, passionately appealed to the commissioner to convey a message to State Governor Emmanuel Adil and President Salva Kiir to institute dialogue to enable suffering citizens to return home.

“Our people are getting thinner every day in the [refugee] camps because they do not have enough food, and some are brought back dead,” he said. “They are still in the camps because our country is insecure. So, my plea to you, honourable commissioner, as our voice, is to tell the governor and the president that we, the people of Greater Yei, want peace and stability, and we want to come back home.”

“However, where is the home when everywhere is not safe?” Rev. Kenyi asked.
