Central Equatoria Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony has upgraded Yei Civil Hospital to a regional referral hospital as part of efforts to expand healthcare services in the state.
Speaking during a visit to Yei River County on Wednesday, Adil also announced the upgrading of primary healthcare centres in Lainya and Terekeka counties to county hospitals.
The governor said the changes were part of government policy and should be respected by organisations working in the health sector.
“I promote Yei hospital to regional referral state hospital because it is beyond county hospital. All our people and organizations have to respect the decision of the government for health service,” Adil said.
He said his administration would mobilise resources to establish a mortuary at the Yei Regional Referral Hospital.
The governor also said the government would work with health partners to fence the hospital, train primary healthcare workers and rehabilitate health facilities damaged during the conflict.
Central Equatoria Health Minister Joyce Bakwa welcomed the move but called for urgent support to fence the hospital and establish a mortuary.
She also appealed for additional skilled health workers, saying the hospital was treating a large number of patients.
The upgrade is expected to expand Yei hospital’s capacity to provide specialised healthcare to communities in Yei and surrounding areas.
The upgrade will require additional staff, equipment, infrastructure and funding to enable the hospital to provide specialised and emergency care to patients from Yei and surrounding areas.
