Health authorities in Abiemnhom County, Ruweng Administrative Area, have reported 97 cases of measles between December 2023 and February 2024.
The State Ministry of Health revealed that since December, there have been a total of 97 measles cases in Abiemnhom County, with no reported deaths across all payams.
Nyok Chubkuer, a Surveillance Officer at Abiemnhom County, told Radio Tamazuj Friday that 47 children were identified as new cases within the past two days and are currently receiving treatment at Abiemnhom Hospital.
“We initially recorded 50 cases in December, and in the past two days alone, we have registered 47 new cases, bringing the total to 97. We are observing a daily increase in cases,” Chubkuer explained.
A concerning rise in measles cases has been reported among returnees and refugees who fled the conflict in Sudan to seek refuge in South Sudan, where they endure challenging humanitarian conditions.
Recently, the Ministry of Health in Ruweng Administrative Area declared a measles outbreak in Abiemnhom County.
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease, marked by fever, cough, and red spots on the skin and is spread by coughing and contact with fluids from the mouth and nose of the infected.
It remains a cause of death among young children globally, despite the availability of a safe and effective vaccine, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
