The commissioner of Mayendit County in Unity State has lifted a suspension on traditional cultural events, reversing a ban imposed by the previous administration.
Commissioner Brig. Gen. Matip Gatluok announced the decision Monday after meeting with representatives from 13 youth groups who requested the restoration of cultural dance practices.
The events had been suspended in September 2025 by former commissioner Marco Juong Magok to prioritize agricultural work and dyke construction during the rainy season. Gatluok was appointed in November 2025.
Addressing community members, Commissioner Gatluok warned that violence or unrest during the ceremonies would not be tolerated.
“If some youth become involved in violence during traditional cultural ceremonies, we will not understand ourselves,” Gatluok said. He said authorities would intervene and could confiscate property if fights or injuries occur.
Youth representative Gatkuoth Riak Kuol assured the commissioner that activities would be peaceful.
“As the youths of the county, you need to give us our right and give us a chance to conduct our traditional ceremony,” Kuol said.
Some residents view the reinstatement of cultural events as a step toward rebuilding community ties.
