The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) on Saturday condemned the killing of Sudanese Red Crescent Society volunteer Ahmed Yaqoub Othman, who was killed while providing first aid to wounded civilians in Sudan’s North Kordofan state.
According to the IFRC, Othman was killed on June 10 on the outskirts of El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, while assisting people injured in earlier attacks.
Othman served as a volunteer with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society’s North Kordofan branch and was supporting humanitarian activities in the area when the incident occurred.
The IFRC expressed its condolences to Othman’s family, friends and colleagues, describing his death as a reminder of the dangers faced by humanitarian workers and volunteers operating in conflict-affected areas.
“Ahmed’s commitment to serving vulnerable people embodied the humanitarian values of the Red Cross and Red Crescent,” the organization said in a statement.
The IFRC reiterated its call for the protection of humanitarian personnel and volunteers, saying they must be able to carry out their work safely and without fear of attack.
The organization said Othman’s contribution to his community would be remembered, adding that the global Red Cross and Red Crescent network mourns the loss of a colleague who served with compassion and dedication.
