Police authorities in Tambura County, Western Equatoria State, said they are investigating the killing of a civilian who was shot dead by unidentified gunmen Tuesday while returning home from his farm.
The victim was identified as Kennedy Kuragpio, 36.
State Police Commissioner Gen. Phillip Madut Tong told Radio Tamazuj that the attackers remain at large.
“We have received reports of one civilian killed by unknown gunmen in Tambura. Investigations are ongoing, and we appeal to the community to cooperate with security forces in identifying the criminals,” Tong said. He condemned the killing as a criminal attack that threatens peace and stability.
The police officer said security forces have intensified patrols to restore calm and prevent similar incidents.
Local residents, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of their safety, said they are concerned. Many have taken shelter in camps, fearing further attacks.
“We heard that criminals may strike again. We don’t know what to do, and many of us are now hiding in camps,” one resident said.
A community leader urged government authorities to intervene.
“It is the responsibility of the county commissioner and security forces to protect the community during these difficult times,” the community leader said. “People are suffering and dying. We call on both state and national governments to support our commissioner in identifying those responsible for this attack.”
Tombura County has recently witnessed violence carried out by armed groups, raising fears that the unrest could fuel ethnic tensions in the area.
