Father, chief arrested in connection with revenge killing in Uror

Authorities said they have arrested the father of a suspected murderer and a local chief following a revenge attack that left a businessman dead in Yuai Town, the headquarters of Uror County.

The killing, which occurred Sunday evening, sparked tensions that forced the temporary closure of the town’s main market. Businesses only resumed after security forces were deployed to the area.

Majiok Chop, Uror County’s information director, confirmed the arrests to Radio Tamazuj Tuesday and said the situation has since stabilized.

The victim, identified as John Anei, was shot dead inside his internet café by an assailant allegedly avenging relatives killed in a May road ambush in neighboring Twic East County.

“It was on Sunday at 7 p.m. that a man called John Anei was shot dead at his internet café. The situation was tense, with the market temporarily closed,” Chop said.

Preliminary investigations suggest the attack was retaliatory. “Two months ago, three men were shot dead in Twic East while in a vehicle en route to Uror County,” Chop said. “A man avenging those killed targeted this businessman from Bor.”

In response, authorities detained the suspect’s father and the chief of Wickol Payam, where the alleged perpetrator is from. Security forces have since been deployed to maintain order, with additional protection provided to non-natives in the area.

Meanwhile, James Gai Makoor, Bor County’s commissioner, said he intervened to prevent further escalation by urging the victim’s family to remain calm.

“The incident in Uror County was a targeted revenge killing,” Makoor said. “On Monday, we met the family of the deceased and their chief. We appealed for calm, and the tension has been resolved since yesterday. Bor is calm as investigations into the killing continue.”
