Bor residents say gang crackdown has improved public safety

Residents of Bor, the capital of Jonglei State, say security has improved following the deployment of additional security personnel to crack down on criminal gangs locally known as “crews.”

The deployment, announced last week by Bor County authorities, followed repeated complaints from residents over attacks, robberies and thefts that had raised concerns about public safety.

Several residents told Radio Tamazuj on Thursday that the increased security presence had reduced criminal activity and restored confidence, allowing people to move around more freely, including in the evenings.

“The security situation has improved greatly compared to the past few months,” resident Nyangong said.

“In our area, criminals used to hide and operate freely, creating fear among residents. Since the deployment of security officers, those activities have reduced significantly, and people feel much safer,” she said.

Nyangong urged the authorities to maintain the security operations to ensure the improvements are sustained.

Another resident, Thon Wun Biar Mayol, called on parents and guardians to support efforts to curb crime by discouraging young people from joining criminal gangs.

“Parents have an important role to play in ending criminal activities. They should not interfere when security officers arrest individuals involved in crimes. Instead, they should guide their children toward responsible behavior and support the rule of law,” Thon said.

John Kelei, another resident, said the deployment had helped restore normal life in Bor.

“Today, people can walk in the evening and conduct their activities without being harassed by criminal elements. This is a positive development that should be protected through continued security presence,” he said.

Residents thanked the state authorities for responding to public concerns and called for the crackdown on criminal gangs to continue to ensure lasting peace and security.

Last week, the Bor County commissioner announced the deployment of additional security personnel across the town following repeated complaints from residents over attacks, robberies and thefts allegedly carried out by gangs.
