The nonprofit youth-led organization Markaz Al Salam (MAS) commended South Sudan’s youth for tackling contemporary challenges with courage, creativity and conviction.
The group expressed its praise in a Friday press release marking International Youth Day, celebrated globally under the theme: “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond.”
Supported by Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA), MAS said it joined the global celebration, noting the theme strongly resonated with the aspirations and experiences of South Sudanese youth, who continue to shape the nation’s future.
“Across every corner of South Sudan—from urban centers to rural communities—young people are rising to meet the challenges of our time with courage, creativity and conviction. Their voices are not only calling for change; they are driving it,” the release said.
This year’s theme, it added, is not just a slogan but a reflection of the transformative power of youth-led initiatives, reinforcing that sustainable development cannot be achieved without their full participation.
“Their energy, ideas and leadership are essential to building a peaceful, prosperous and inclusive South Sudan,” MAS said.
The organization noted that despite their diversity, South Sudan’s youth are actively driving progress. Across the country, young people have shown resilience and determination, contributing to peacebuilding, conflict resolution, innovation, entrepreneurship, education and skills development.
MAS recommended several steps to advance the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through youth-led actions, including prioritizing youth legislation. It urged the swift passage of key bills, such as the Youth National Development Policy, the Women and Youth Enterprise Fund Bill—to improve access to loans—and the Women, Youth and Sports Bill.
MAS reaffirmed its commitment to empowering young people and amplifying their voices.
“We urge all stakeholders to prioritize youth development, enact youth legislation and create meaningful opportunities for youth to thrive,” it said.
