Yei Regional Hospital in Central Equatoria State has received a digital X-ray machine, seven wheelchairs and protective clothing for medical staff in a donation aimed at improving diagnostic and healthcare services.
The equipment was donated by the Be the Change Nzuri DAIMA Foundation and officially handed over to the hospital on Tuesday in Yei.
The handover was attended by Yei River County Commissioner Samuel Henry Malimbo, the county executive director, the director of the county health department, health officials and representatives of the foundation.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, Yei River County Health Director Simon Sebit confirmed the donation and thanked the foundation for its support to the health sector in Yei River County.
Sebit said the X-ray machine had been transported from Kampala in Uganda through Koboko before being brought to Yei.
He said the machine would reduce the need for patients to travel elsewhere for X-ray services.
“Our community is not going to suffer by looking for an X-ray machine. We have got it now,” Sebit said.
Dr Emmanuel Laku, the acting medical director of Yei Regional Hospital, said the digital X-ray machine was in good condition and would improve access to diagnostic services.
He said it would produce clearer images than the hospital’s previous manual X-ray equipment, helping health workers diagnose fractures and other medical conditions.
“This is a digitalised X-ray. The previous one was just a manual one. It did not have the same quality or capacity,” Dr Laku said.
He called on health partners to support training for hospital staff on how to operate and maintain the equipment to ensure it remains functional and available to patients in the Greater Yei area.
Joseph Yengatu, executive director of the Be the Change Nzuri DAIMA Foundation, said the organisation had also provided seven wheelchairs and protective clothing for medical personnel.
“We realised that there are a lot of challenges that the community of Yei faces in terms of health. The health centre is lacking many things that are necessary,” he said.
Yengatu said the X-ray machine was secured through the foundation’s partner organisation, Zuridaima, which is based in Spain.
