Western Bahr el Ghazal State has received voter registration materials ahead of South Sudan’s planned December 2026 general elections, the state’s National Election Commission chairperson said.
The materials, which arrived at Wau airport on Thursday, include 70 cartons of voter registration books, pens and uniforms for registration officials, Arkangelo Udo Agany said.
He said the next steps would be to train registration officials and distribute the materials to designated voter registration centres assessed in July.
Agany said the public would be informed about the registration process through various media outlets, adding that training would begin once the National Election Commission issued instructions.
“I was to ensure that I have received the voter registration books, which contained 70 cartons, including uniforms for voter registration officers and other materials like pens and other things,” he said.
He also said registration officials had been trained and would begin registering eligible voters at designated centres.
“I have trained all the voter registration officers, and automatically, they are going to start registration of names of eligible voters in the specific centres accessed in July,” he said.
Agany urged residents not to rely on rumours circulating on social media, saying the elections would go ahead and encouraging eligible citizens to register to vote.
The arrival of the materials marks a step in preparations for the elections, although voter registration has yet to begin.
