A lawmaker in Western Bahr el Ghazal State Transitional Legislative Assembly, Jacob Gaetano Baringi, is receiving treatment at Wau Teaching Hospital after he was attacked and wounded by unknown assailants in Wau town on Sunday night, family members said.
His wife, Awal Gabriel Gok, told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the incident occurred around 10 p.m. when Gaetano was travelling to the Wau Youth Center.
She said he was stopped by four men riding a motorcycle near the area between a Catholic Church compound and Auxilium Primary School.
“At around 10 p.m., he departed from our residence… the four men appeared in the middle of the road on a motorcycle and ordered him to stop,” she said.
According to her account, the assailants initially told him they had a message for him, but then allowed him to continue before turning back and attacking him moments later.
She said Gaetano managed to throw his mobile phone into nearby grass before he was struck and fell. He sustained injuries to the head, waist and buttocks, she added.
Awal said authorities were searching for the attackers and that a case had been opened in connection with the incident.
Police in Wau could not immediately be reached for comment.
