W. Bahr el Ghazal governor Sherif Daniel survives road accident

The Governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal State, Sherif Daniel Sherif, survived a road accident on Friday after his official vehicle collided with other cars in a border area between Warrap and Western Bahr el Ghazal states, a government official said.

The accident occurred while the governor was travelling in a convoy, officials said.

Western Bahr el Ghazal State Minister of Information and Communication Samuel Nicola Cornelo told Radio Tamazuj that the governor was unhurt.

“I am with the governor. He told me he is okay,” Nicola said, adding that he was assessing the circumstances surrounding the accident.

He said the governor had been part of a delegation stationed at the Tharkueng border area between Warrap and Western Bahr el Ghazal to receive President Salva Kiir Mayardit, who was returning from his home village of Akon in Warrap State’s Gogrial West County.

Nicola said the accident occurred after the convoy departed Tharkueng and passed Marial Baai.

Nicola, the state government spokesman, said only vehicles in the government convoy were involved in the incident.

Sherif was appointed governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal State by President Kiir in September 2025. He is affiliated with the SPLM-IO faction led by Peacebuilding Minister Stephen Par Kuol.
