US sanctions Sudan over ‘use of chemical weapons’

The United States Department of State announced on Thursday it is imposing sanctions on Sudan over the country’s alleged use of chemical weapons in 2024.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said the US government determined in April that Sudan’s government used chemical weapons and added that it notified Congress about the findings today.

“Following a 15-day Congressional notification period, the United States will impose sanctions on Sudan, including restrictions on US exports to Sudan and on access to US government lines of credit,” Bruce stressed in a statement.

Tammy urged Sudan to “cease all chemical weapons use and uphold its obligations under the CWC [Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act].”

The measures are set to come into effect on June 6.
