A health official in Unity State’s Koch County has reported two cases of babies born with deformities at the Mirmir Primary Health Centre in February, raising concerns about possible environmental contamination.
James Tut Riak, the County Health Director, said similar abnormalities have also been observed among domestic animals in the area, prompting growing suspicion that the cases may be linked to oil pollution.
He highlighted that Koch County has extensive oil and gas operations, particularly in Tharjitah Block 5A, which he said accounts for environmental pollution in the area.
“Several cases of babies born with deformities have occurred across the Koch County, and we held several meetings with the Sudd Petroleum Operating Co. Ltd (SPOC) to discuss the issue and support for the victims, but there has never been any official response from the company,” he stated.
He further called on oil companies to operate responsibly and safeguard public health.
Meanwhile, Buom Wal, a resident of Koch County, said the latest two cases of babies born with deformities were recorded on 7 February.
“We urged the government to talk to SPOC to assist us with medication that can support affected communities who are witnessing these cases,” he said. “I went and witnessed the cases in Mirmir Primary Health Centre after I heard that there are babies born with deformities.”
