Agricultural authorities in Leer County, Unity State, have urged farmers to use irrigation to protect food production as a prolonged dry spell damages crops.
Simon Liah Kuor, the county’s director of agriculture, environment and forestry, said farmers should use available water sources along riverbanks to continue planting and producing food.
“All crops have been completely damaged, and the community is suffering,” Liah told Radio Tamazuj.
He urged farmers who had recently received seeds from Hope Restoration to continue planting along the riverbanks where water is available.
Liah also appealed to humanitarian and agricultural organisations to provide water pumps and generators to help farmers irrigate their gardens during the dry season.
“We also appeal to our partners to provide pumping generators to support irrigation and ensure food production during this severe dry spell,” he said.
The agriculture department says irrigation could help farmers protect crops and reduce the impact of the dry conditions on food supplies in the county.
