Sudanese flee violence, plead for ceasefire and safe evacuation

Sudanese individuals escaping violence in the Darfur region urgently urge the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to halt fighting, allowing those trapped in the war zone to seek safety.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj in Raja town, refugees who fled El Fasher and El Jenia express concern about their children still being trapped in the conflict area, emphasizing the pressing need for both parties to enable the safe evacuation of civilians.

Juma Mohamed Abdallah, the head of the Darfur community in Raja, highlighted the worsening conditions in Raja county, Western Bahr el Ghazal State, despite being separated from family members.

“Our children are still there, and we ran here. I have nothing to say but thank you. We were tortured so much on our way, and in the end, most of us were killed,” expressed Abdallah. “We don’t want war; we want all guns to fall silent, and we want to live in peace. We are all citizens.”

“We face a significant challenge; we came this year, and we could not cultivate. We are hungry, and we didn’t get seeds to plant. But let us express our gratitude to our relatives, the South Sudanese; when we arrived here, they supported us,” he added.

Adam Mohamed Hassen also called on the RSF to stop fighting. “My name is Adam Mohamed Hassen, all my children are there, and I plead with the RSF to stop fighting so that our children could come out. We don’t have any more problems with them; we are just running,” said Hassen.

“Our children are trapped there, and there is no way for them to come. We are suffering here, and they are suffering there,” he said.

War broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) under Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) Hemedti since April this year, forcing hundreds of thousands to flee to neighbouring countries.

Last week, the UN reported that 300,000 people fled their homes due to fighting in Wad Medani, the provincial capital of Jazirah province, after an attack by the Rapid Support Forces earlier this month.

In response to the ongoing conflict, the United States government, led by the Biden administration, declared that both sides in Sudan’s conflict have committed atrocities in Darfur and other regions, causing grievous human suffering.

The State Department specifically pointed to the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces, holding them responsible for war crimes, crimes against humanity, or both, particularly in Darfur, where the initial conflict in the capital has escalated into ethnic violence in recent weeks.
