SSPDF soldier killed in road accident on Tonj-Wau road

A member of the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) was killed and four others injured when a truck carrying construction materials overturned near the Kapara border checkpoint in Jur River County, Western Bahr el Ghazal State, officials and witnesses said.

An eyewitness told Radio Tamazuj that the Sino truck overturned shortly after passing the Kapara checkpoint at about 7 p.m. on Monday along the Tonj–Wau road.

The soldier, identified only by his nickname “Big Show,” died at the scene. The witness said he was travelling from Juba to Wau on an official military mission.

The four injured passengers were taken to Wau Teaching Hospital for treatment.

A relative of the deceased, identified as Adut, told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that the soldier’s body was expected to be flown to Yirol for burial.

In a separate incident, one person was killed in Watholelo Payam of Jur River County over the weekend, County Commissioner Santino Manut Akec said.

Akec said authorities had launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the killing and to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“A Payam administrator has already been dispatched to the area to gather detailed information and support the investigation,” he said.

The commissioner said authorities were still working to identify both the victim and the perpetrator, as well as establish the cause of the conflict.

He said a full report would be released once investigations were completed.

Akec added that the security situation in Watholelo Payam remained calm, with residents continuing their daily activities without disruption.

He urged community members to resolve disputes through dialogue rather than violence, stressing the importance of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect and unity in maintaining stability and preventing further loss of life.
