A high-level committee of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) Party arrived in Eastern Equatoria State on Friday to begin reorganizing the party’s structures from the grassroots level ahead of internal congresses and primary elections.
Mary Paul Unde, secretary of the high-level committee organizing SPLM congresses in Eastern Equatoria, said the team will begin the process by engaging party members and organizing structures from bomas to payams and then counties.
Speaking to journalists upon arrival in Torit, she said the mission would focus on strengthening the party’s internal organization before proceeding to primary elections.
“The congress is not just meant for the nomination of governors and MPs; it is also meant to organize the party structures, so it is two tasks in one mission,” Unde said.
She explained that the committee would first conduct party congresses before moving to the primary election process.
Unde urged SPLM members across Eastern Equatoria to prepare to participate in the congresses, describing their participation as a right within the party.
She said the team would also meet state authorities and the SPLM state secretariat to brief them on the mission and coordinate the activities.
Meanwhile, Akile Mboya Peter, the SPLM state secretary for Eastern Equatoria, welcomed the committee’s arrival, describing it as an important step towards implementing the party’s congress programme.
“I am happy that the congress organizing committee is finally touching the soil of Eastern Equatoria State; this is a great achievement for the SPLM leadership,” he said.
He called on SPLM members at all levels to cooperate with the organizing team and prepare for the process as it moves from the state secretariat to grassroots structures.
The committee said the duration of its stay would depend on the progress of the congress process across the state.
The exercise is expected to cover party structures at boma, payam and county levels, followed by primary elections to select candidates for political positions.
The arrival of the committee marks the beginning of the party’s planned internal reorganisation in Eastern Equatoria, as the SPLM prepares its structures for the next stage of political activities.
