South Sudan Football Federation picks Amin over Maduot

Francis Amin has been elected president of the South Sudan Football Federation (SSFF), defeating incumbent General Augustine Maduot in a decisive vote on Friday.

Amin secured 26 of 38 votes cast in Friday’s election, while Maduot received 12. In a brief Facebook post, Amin thanked supporters, saying, “We have won the race. Thank you.”

A former SSFF president from 2017 to 2021, Amin campaigned on a platform of revitalizing football development in the country. His new term will run until 2029.

Maduot, who led the federation for the past four years, conceded defeat and pledged to remain involved in football. “This defeat will not send me away from the sport,” he said.

Makur Majok and Deng Abdelrahman Aguer were elected first and second vice presidents, respectively.

Akol Panchol, a representative of the Bor Football Association, expressed hope that newly elected SSFF President Francis Amin would implement reforms in South Sudanese football. “We supported Francis because we believe he will bring positive changes, including resolving budget issues for our association,” Panchol said.

Meanwhile, Ibrahim Riak, a supporter of outgoing president General Augustine Maduot, congratulated Amin on his victory. “We lost the election, but we accept the results,” Riak said, calling the process “democratic and transparent.”

Background on Amin

A businessman and the SSFF’s second-ever president, Amin’s previous tenure saw South Sudan gain full FIFA membership and begin World Cup qualifying campaigns. However, his administration faced criticism over the stalled renovation of Juba National Stadium, despite FIFA funding.
