At least six people were killed, and two were wounded, while four others are missing following a road ambush in Jonglei State’s Duk County on Monday, authorities said.
Duk County Commissioner John Chatim Ruei told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that the attack occurred at the outskirts of Pajut Town, where passengers were heading after leaving the county headquarters of Poktap hours earlier.
“On Monday at around 3 P.M., a passenger vehicle was attacked between Poktap and Pajut Town. The vehicle was carrying passengers from Poktap to Pajut when it was waylaid, leaving six dead,” he explained. “Two people were injured, and four others remain missing.”
Chatim condemned the attack and said armed assailants from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area were involved.
“According to eyewitnesses, the attackers were youth from the neighboring Greater Pibor,” he stated.
However, GPAA Information Minister Jacob Werchum Jouk said they were not aware of the attack.
“We are not aware of the incident,” he said. “There is no way fingers should be pointed at GPAA when no criminals have been arrested by Jonglei authorities. We cannot confirm this attack.”
