A South Sudan presidential medical team is providing free medical treatment at Akon Hospital in Gogrial West County, Warrap State, local health officials and patients said on Monday.
President Salva Kiir travelled to his home village of Akon after concluding public rallies in Wau and Kuajok over the weekend. It was his first visit to the wider Bahr el Ghazal region since 2023.
Kiir is currently in his home village of Akon on what he described as a private visit to reconnect with the family. However, some political analysts have also linked the trip to early political mobilisation ahead of elections scheduled for December 2026.
The hospital’s medical in-charge, Dr John Arel Akot, welcomed the outreach, saying patients of all ages were receiving treatment and medicines provided through the president’s office.
“Our presidential medical doctors are doing great thing because if you come here, you will see all people including small children, young person and old-age persons gathered and that we have received more than 300 patients today (Monday),” Arel told Radio Tamazuj.
Medical personnel said the team is treating conditions including pneumonia, malaria and other complications. The outreach began on Sunday, June 7, and is expected to run for several days.
He added: “They (doctors) are treating more cases such as Pneumonia, Malaria and also they treat other diseases’ complications among children. They have started the activities on yesterday 7 June and will conclude within five days.”
Patients confirmed to Radio Tamazuj that they were receiving treatment free of charge.
“I have received my test results and I have also received my treatment in form of medical tabs after I visited the hospital this morning,” said patient John Aguot.
Another patient, Ateny Alor, said she was still waiting to be attended with her child.
“The medics have already prescribed the medicines to other patients on the queue in front of us, but my child and I are waiting on the line, waiting our medications,” she said.
