The police in Yambio County in Western Equatoria State have launched an investigation into a shooting incident that left one civilian injured at a Nightclub in the Masia area on Wednesday night.
According to the State Police Commissioner Major General Philip Madut Tong, heavy gunfire was reported around midnight at Nakis Disco Club in Masia, Yambio County.
“A committee led by the brigade commander has been formed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting,” he explained. “What we know so far is that a civilian was shot during the night. The victim is currently receiving treatment at Yambio State Hospital and has been taken for surgery.”
He urged residents to remain calm as police and joint security forces continue investigations to determine what triggered the incident and who was responsible.
Yambio Town Mayor, Singira Sasa, confirmed that a misunderstanding occurred between some security personnel at the nightclub, which led to the gunfire. He assured residents that the situation is under control and that the government is committed to ensuring that those responsible face justice.
“The government is investigating the matter. We have several forces on night patrol, including Mobile Unit Two, but we want to ensure that residents live in peace,” he said. “Without peace, there can be no development. We need unity and love among the communities in Yambio.”
Meanwhile, Rose Obede, a director at the state health ministry, said two young men aged 18 and 20 were admitted to Yambio State Hospital with gunshot injuries.
“One of the victims has been transferred to Juba by the Red Cross for advanced medical care, while the other is receiving treatment at St. Theresa Hospital in Nzara,” she disclosed. “Doctors will continue to monitor his condition and may refer him to Juba if necessary.”
Yambio County Commissioner Michael Ismail Medi declined to comment, saying that statements on security matters would come from the state leadership.
