A mother and her three children were killed in artillery shelling of Kadugli, the capital of Sudan’s South Kordofan state, the Sudan Doctors Network said on Saturday.
The network said preliminary information indicated that forces of the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), led by Abdul-Aziz al-Hilu, carried out the shelling on Oct. 10.
The SPLM-N is allied with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RFP) and is part of the parallel administration Founding Tasis.
The independent network condemned the attack, saying shelling of residential areas endangers civilians in a region already facing severe security and humanitarian challenges.
It accused the SPLM-N forces of being responsible for the incident and called for an immediate end to attacks on civilians, urging all parties to the conflict to comply with international humanitarian law.
The group also called on the United Nations and humanitarian and human rights organisations to document alleged violations, pursue accountability and strengthen civilian protection in conflict-affected areas.
The SPLM-N officials in the state could not immediately be reached for comment.
Sudan’s three Kordofan states — North, West and South Kordofan — have recently been witnessing fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Sudan has been engulfed in war between the army and the RSF since April 2023, when tensions over plans to integrate the paramilitary force into the regular military escalated into open conflict.
The war has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced about 13 million, according to the figures provided.
