Armed assailants attacked a cattle camp in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area’s (GPAA) Verthet County on Saturday night, killing a mother and raiding dozens of cattle, local authorities said.
Jacob Werchum Jouk, the GPAA information minister, told Radio Tamazuj on Monday that the attackers were armed youth from neighboring Kapoeta North County in Eastern Equatoria State.
“A mother was killed, leaving her newborn baby helpless,” Jouk said. He added that the attackers raided 89 head of cattle, which were later recovered after local forces pursued the group.
Jouk said no further casualties were reported during the recovery operation, and the stolen cattle were returned.
However, Eastern Equatoria State Information Minister Elia John Ahaji said his office had not received any official communication about the incident from GPAA authorities.
