The Leer County Fisheries Department in Unity State has introduced licenses for fish traders as part of efforts to regulate the fish business and ensure compliance with regulations.

Simon Gatley, a county fisheries inspector, urged fish traders to obtain the required licenses before transporting or selling fish, saying the license provides traders with official recognition and allows them to conduct their businesses legally.

He warned that authorities may detain fish belonging to traders operating without the required documentation.

“If you want to work as a trader in the fish business, you must obtain an official license from the fisheries department,” he stated.

Gatley encouraged traders to work closely with his department and obtain the necessary documentation to avoid legal action and ensure smooth operation of their businesses.

Authorities said the process is intended to formally recognize fish traders, regulate the fish trade and ensure that businesses operate in accordance with fisheries regulations.

Meanwhile, Luny Tap, a fishmonger, said they will comply with the fisheries department’s regulations.

“There is no way to avoid licensing and the taxation policy,” he said. “We are going to pay the fees required from us to the authorities of the fisheries department.”
