Hospital staffer critically injured in Yambio armed attack

A staff member at Yambio State Hospital in Western Equatoria state was seriously injured in an armed attack at his home Saturday night, police said.

Maj. Gen. Phillip Madut Tong, police commissioner in Western Equatoria state, told Radio Tamazuj that the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. at the residence of Christopher James Ezekiel Ndukpo in Yambio.

“Unknown gunmen came at night, attacked a civilian at his home, shot him and injured him badly,” Madut said. “The victim was rushed to Yambio State Hospital, and police are investigating the matter to apprehend the suspects.”

The senior police officer has urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue.

A family member, speaking on condition of anonymity due to security concerns, confirmed that Ndukpo is the eldest son of James Ezekiel Ndukpo, the county health director of Yambio. They said Christopher has worked at Yambio Teaching Hospital for nearly nine years.

The attackers reportedly looted items from the home, though the extent of the losses is still being verified, the source said.

A hospital colleague said Ndukpo was brought in with gunshot wounds and remains in critical condition.

Civil society activist Edmund Yakani condemned the attack, calling it part of a troubling pattern of armed crime in Yambio.

“I call on the new leadership of Western Equatoria State, including the governor and deputy governor, to prioritize civilian safety within their first 100 days in office,” Yakani said. “Armed robberies, killings and looting must be brought to an end.”
