The Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of the SPLM/SPLA-IO Kitgwang Declaration, Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual, has said, on the passing of Henry Dila Odwar, that South Sudan has lost South Sudan lost a dedicated servant who fought bravely for democracy, justice, and liberty.
A condolence message seen by this publication states that it is with profound sorrow that the leadership of SPLM/SPLA-IO Kitgwang announces the passing of their esteemed Political Leader and Deputy Chairman, Hon. Henry Dila Odwar, at 9:30 PM E.T. on Tuesday, June 24th, 2025, at Grand River Hospital surrounded by his wife and children in Canada.
“The Kitgwang Movement lost a great political mind in leadership. Hon. Henry Odwar is a Geophysicist, freedom advocate, and National Peace Architect. The people of South Sudan lost an important icon who shaped their political landscape through his unwavering commitment, integrity, and vision,” the message reads in part. “He has left an indelible mark on our movement and our nation. His wisdom, humility, and passion inspired all who worked alongside him, and his legacy will continue to guide us through the challenges ahead.”
Gen. Gatwech said that Odwar was an avid achiever and statesman who chaired the standing committee on Energy and Petroleum in the South Sudan National Assembly, providing oversight for an efficient and responsible government.
“He was a Minister of Energy in the South Sudan transitional government, where he formulated sustainable policies,” the statement said. “South Sudan lost a dedicated servant who fought bravely for democracy, justice, and liberty.”
“On behalf of the SPLM/A KITGWANG leadership and my behalf, I send my deepest condolences to Lilian, his children, family, friends, colleagues, and the entire Equatoria community of South Sudan. Hon. Henry will be remembered as a great leader who dedicated his life to South Sudan and its people,” Gen. Gatwech concluded.
