Mabor Makuac Ater, a former commissioner of Rumbek East County in Lakes State, died in Juba on Friday after a prolonged illness linked to diabetes, family members and local officials said.
Makuac died at Nile King Specialized Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment since 2023, according to relatives.
Sultan Manyang Derder, the paramount chief of Rumbek East County, described Makuac’s death as a major loss for the county and Lakes State.
“He will be remembered as a fair leader who delivered services to the people and upheld justice in the community,” Derder told Radio Tamazuj. “He was also a peacemaker who worked to maintain harmony among communities in Rumbek East.”
Former SPLM secretary-general for Rumbek East County Gueny Madit said he was saddened by the news, adding that he had learned Makuac had been suffering from diabetes and had recently been admitted to hospital after developing a fever.
“He was responsive to security concerns and maintained stability during his tenure as commissioner,” Madit said. “He loved his people and was a committed member of the SPLM.”
John Dhuorjang Magok, a former office manager to Makuac, said the late official served as commissioner of the former Eastern Bahr el Naam County from 2017 to 2018 and later as commissioner of Rumbek East County between 2022 and 2023.
“He was a family man and a respected leader who believed in serving his people,” Magok said. “One of his notable achievements was helping maintain security and stability in Rumbek East County.”
Magok said Makuac had been receiving treatment for diabetes since 2023 and remained under medical care until his death.
Funeral arrangements were yet to be announced. Community leaders and family members are expected to decide whether he will be buried in Rumbek town or his home area of Atiaba Payam.
