Displaced Akobo county commissioner received with gifts in Bor

The Commissioner of Bor County, Samuel Ateny Pech, on Friday received the government-appointed Commissioner of Akobo County, James Kueth Makuach, who arrived in Bor after fleeing his headquarters following clashes last month.

Kueth left Akobo after the area was captured by the opposition SPLM-IO during fighting on April 13, forcing government officials and troops of the SSPDF to withdraw to the Greater Pibor Administrative Area.

Officials in Bor described Kueth’s arrival as part of efforts to maintain local administration amid continuing insecurity in parts of Jonglei State.

During the reception, the Bor County commissioner presented Kueth with a bull and 2 million South Sudanese pounds as a gesture of solidarity and hospitality.

“I am honored to receive the commissioner of Akobo in Bor. We welcome him and will support him during his stay,” Ateny said.

Kueth, who arrived with lawmakers, traditional leaders and security officers, thanked local authorities for the reception, saying he would hold consultations with state officials before proceeding to the temporary administrative headquarters in Walgak.

“I arrived safely and appreciate the warm welcome. I will engage with relevant authorities before moving to Walgak,” he said.

Akobo County has experienced repeated clashes linked to tensions between government forces and the SPLM-IO, with the border area near Ethiopia often affected by insecurity, displacement and disrupted administration.

Following the latest takeover, Jonglei State Governor Riek Gai Kok ordered the temporary relocation of Akobo County’s headquarters from Akobo town to Walgak.
