Bridge construction halted in Ezo County after attack on workers

Construction of a key bridge in Yangiri Payam in Ezo County of Western Equatoria State has been suspended after an attack by armed assailants killed a driver and wounded two workers, officials said Thursday.

The assault Wednesday targeted a team from the aid group Rural Development Action Aid (RDAA), shocking local residents and prompting the organization to halt work over safety concerns.

Albert Zingorani, RDAA’s deputy director, confirmed the suspension, citing worsening security.

“We have suspended our operations because of insecurity,” Zingorani told Radio Tamazuj. “We are yet to meet with authorities to discuss the way forward and secure guarantees for our staff’s safety before resuming.”

He said unidentified armed men ambushed the construction crew, underscoring the risks posed by armed groups in the area.

“We need firm assurances from the government and security forces,” Zingorani said. “Once we have those, we will implement measures to prevent future attacks.”

RDAA is coordinating with Ezo County Commissioner Abel Sudan and other leaders, though formal meetings with officials are pending.

“The government is fully aware, and we hope an agreement will be reached soon to allow safe resumption of work,” Zingorani said. He urged armed groups to stop targeting aid workers, stressing that such projects aim to help communities.

Commissioner Sudan confirmed visiting the attack site and said authorities were working to restore security.

“Two people were shot, and a driver was killed,” Sudan said. “This bridge connects Yambio, Tombura and Wau, serving as a route to Juba. We cannot abandon it.”

Local resident James Anida expressed concern over the suspension, particularly as heavy rains worsen road conditions.

“The bridge is vital for daily movement. Without it, crossing becomes impossible during floods,” Anida said.

Community leaders and residents called for stability to ensure the bridge’s completion.
