Body of late Bishop Nathaniel Garang arrives in Bor

The body of the late Bishop Nathaniel Garang Anyieth has arrived in Bor, where funeral prayers and burial preparations are underway at St. Andrew’s Cathedral.

Prayers were held on Tuesday at the cathedral ahead of his burial, which is expected to take place within the church compound in line with Episcopal Church regulations.

A memorial service held on Monday in Juba brought together senior government officials, diplomats and clergy to honour the late bishop’s decades of service.

Vice President James Wani Igga described him as a “selfless” figure whose legacy reflected that of church leaders who played roles during South Sudan’s liberation struggle.

“Bishop Nathaniel was a man of sacrifice and vision. His commitment to peace and community development reflects the spirit of those who stood with the people during the liberation era,” he said.

Senior presidential adviser Kuol Manyang Juuk urged mourners to celebrate the bishop’s life, describing it as dedicated to service.

“Let us remember Bishop Nathaniel not in sorrow alone, but in appreciation of a life well lived in service to God and humanity,” he said.

Justice Minister Michael Makuei Lueth said the late bishop had consistently promoted unity, calling on South Sudanese to uphold that message.

“His message throughout his ministry was unity. We must honour him by fostering reconciliation and togetherness among our people,” he said.

U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan Michael J. Adler also extended condolences, urging unity as a way of honouring the bishop’s legacy.

“Bishop Nathaniel dedicated his life to bringing people together. The best way to honour him is to continue building unity and peace in South Sudan,” he said.

A family representative, Mathiang Kuch, described him as a widely respected church leader whose influence extended beyond his diocese.

“He was not only a spiritual leader to his diocese but a father figure to many. His impact will continue to be felt for generations,” he said.

Bishop Nathaniel became the first diocesan bishop of Bor in 1984 and served for more than four decades.

He is widely regarded as one of the most respected leaders in the Episcopal Church of South Sudan, known for his pastoral work and advocacy for peace and unity.
