Aweil West authorities apprehend man who shot, robbed motorcyclist

Police and local authorities in Aweil West County in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State have apprehended a suspect called Akech Kon Angok, who shot and robbed a motorcycle from a man he hired to transport him on 4 July.

A local administrator who spoke to Radio Tamazuj on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press, confirmed that the suspect has been arrested for the shooting and robbing of a motorcycle taxi rider identified as Wek Wek Wek who was transporting him from Aweil North County to the Chelkou area of Aweil West County.

“Yes, I can confirm that the suspect was identified as Akech Kon Angok, aged 28, and the wounded rider is called Wek Wek Wek,” he said. “The incident happened when Wek was transporting Angok from Gokmachar to the Chelkou area on a boda-boda (motorbike taxi), and when they reached a forested area, the accused shot the rider in the face and took off with the motorbike.”

“The wounded Wek was the one who came with the full report about the incident and told us that his passenger attacked him,” he added.

He said the accused is in police detention and that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is investigating the matter and will arraign him in court.

For his part, Aweil West County Commissioner Abuol Akok Akok said the case has been transferred to Aweil North County because the people involved in the matter hail from there.

“The case was first brought to us here in Aweil West County, but it was referred to Gokmachar in Aweil North County because the attacker and motorist are residents of that county,” she stated. “According to the information I received from there, I heard that the case was resolved.”

Meanwhile, Deng Kuel Kuel, the Aweil North County commissioner, contends that the case must be tried in Aweil West County, where the crime happened.

“The people involved are from Aweil North County, but the incident happened in Aweil West County, and according to legal procedures, the case is supposed to be tried at the crime scene.”
