Adil enters Central Equatoria governorship race as SPLM candidate

Former Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony said on Thursday he had accepted the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement’s (SPLM) nomination to contest for governor in elections scheduled for December.

Adil made the announcement at the SPLM national secretariat in Juba, saying his nomination followed consultations with party members across the state’s six counties and Wonduruba Administrative Payam.

“I have accepted their call to be the SPLM nominee for the general election for the position of chairman and governor of Central Equatoria State,” Adil said.

Adil has served two separate periods as governor of Central Equatoria State. He was first appointed in June 2020 and served until May 2024, when President Salva Kiir Mayardit removed him from office. He returned to the post in November 2025 and remained governor until Sept. 22, when Kiir dissolved the country’s transitional government and the state governments ahead of the planned elections.

Before serving as governor of Central Equatoria, Adil was governor of the defunct Yei River State from 2018 until 2020, when South Sudan reverted from 32 states to its current 10-state system. Yei River State was subsequently incorporated into Central Equatoria.

In accepting the SPLM nomination, Adil said he would work with party members to develop a programme focused on unity, peace and development in Central Equatoria.

He also called on SPLM members seeking the governorship to remain united and compete on the basis of their policies and ideas.

Adil said the programme would be based on the SPLM manifesto and would seek to address the needs of people in Central Equatoria State.

He thanked supporters who attended the declaration, saying their presence demonstrated support for the SPLM, himself and President Salva Kiir, who leads the party.
