The local authorities in Jonglei State’s Uror County have confirmed that at least nine people have died following a cholera outbreak that has seen 138 cases reported over the past two weeks.
Majok Chop, the Director for Information in Uror County, told Radio Tamazuj that the cholera patients are currently receiving treatment at the MSF-Holland Primary Health Care Centre in Pieri Payam.
“A total of 138 people have been admitted since the confirmation of the cholera outbreak; these are referred to as accumulated cases,” he revealed. “Out of this number, nine people died.”
Chop urgently appealed to both the Jonglei State authorities and the national health ministry to swiftly intervene to curb the spread of the disease and support affected communities.
He added that health officials are closely monitoring the situation and have urged the public to adhere to hygiene measures and seek immediate medical attention if they have cholera symptoms.
Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine and is typically spread through contaminated food or water. The ongoing rainy season and limited access to clean water in rural areas like Uror County further complicate containment efforts.
Authorities are emphasizing public awareness campaigns and improving access to clean water as essential next steps in controlling the outbreak.
