22 dead as cholera spreads in Kapoeta

Authorities in Kapoeta, Eastern Equatoria State, have raised alarms over a surge in cholera cases.

Dr. Francis Kherbino Awat, director of Kapoeta Civil Hospital, said suspected cholera cases have risen daily since April 16 despite efforts by the government and health partners.

Awat reported 22 deaths between Kapoeta Civil Hospital and Napataet Primary Healthcare Center. The hospital recorded 294 admissions and 11 deaths, while Napataet PHCC also reported 11 fatalities.

Test samples were sent to Juba three weeks ago and again a week later, but results are still pending, Awat said.

He urged residents to maintain proper hygiene to curb the spread of the disease and noted shortages of medical supplies, including gloves.

Eastern Equatoria State Health Minister Thomas Kotein confirmed the deaths and said patients were being treated at multiple health facilities.

“We have not yet received confirmation from the national lab,” Kotein said, adding that officials are coordinating with the national government for a cholera vaccination campaign.

Kotein called on health partners to provide support, including humanitarian aid.
