Woman kills mother-in-law in Aweil East County

A 22-year-old woman has been arrested after stabbing her mother-in-law to death on Sunday morning in Aweil East County in Northern Bahr El Ghazal State, local authorities and witnesses confirmed.

Ajou Mawein Yuot, the Director for Gender, Child and Social Welfare in the county, announced that the murder occurred during an argument when the suspect’s mother-in-law, Abuk Mawein, 47, was under the influence of alcohol.

“A lady called Adhel Majak Ngor, 22, killed her mother-in-law, Abuk Mawein, 47, in Madhol Payam’s Abu area,” he said. “The deceased, who was under the influence of alcohol, fought the suspected killer for two consecutive days and on the third day, she was killed.”

Pual Kuch, Director for Information and Communication in Aweil East County, said the suspect was apprehended by the South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) and taken to Wanyjok Central Prison.

“The murder happened in a place called Abu Boma under Madhol Payam in Aweil East County, and the accused woman is currently detained at the Wanyjok Central Prison,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Peter Diing, Executive Director for Wider Aid and Development Agency (WADA), attributed the case to hardships and poverty.

“Such incidents are happening because people have been cultivating their crops, but the drought and long dry spell have limited food production this agricultural season,” he said. “The people are developing stress, and family members fight each other as a result of insufficient food.”

According to Diing, insufficient resources have increased stress and domestic violence among family members.
