Sudan’s National Health Insurance Fund in White Nile State on Sunday launched a breast cancer awareness campaign at White Nile Oncology Hospital in Kosti, in partnership with community initiatives.
The campaign seeks to raise awareness of breast cancer and encourage early detection as conflict-related disruption places additional pressure on health services, including access to diagnosis and treatment.
Haider Hashim, director of the fund in the state, said health insurance centres and diagnostic facilities in several localities, including El Geteina, Ad Douiem and Kosti, provide free clinical examinations and laboratory tests.
Hashim said the fund is committed to supporting patients throughout their treatment and stressed the importance of sustained public awareness, including sharing the experiences of cancer survivors.
Naji Suleiman, director of the Kosti Oncology Centre, said social stigma and misconceptions about cancer remained barriers to seeking medical care, with some people viewing the disease as a death sentence.
He said these attitudes contributed to delays in seeking treatment and stressed that early detection was important for improving treatment outcomes.
Lamia Mutawakkil, a media professional who said she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016, shared her experience as a survivor and urged women to seek early screening.
Mutawakkil said the chances of recovery are significantly higher when breast cancer is detected at an early stage.
