A poor family in Yambio, Western Equatoria state, is appealing for urgent humanitarian assistance after a mother survived a complicated delivery of triplets at Yambio State Hospital, leaving the household struggling to care for ten children amid extreme poverty.
Steven Rasasi, the father of the triplets, told Radio Tamazuj on Friday he was grateful for the safe delivery but said the family was now under severe financial strain.
“I am very happy. God has given me three children… This shows that everything comes from God,” he said, adding that people should turn away from witchcraft and rely on God.
He said the family was struggling to meet basic needs, including food and care for the newborns and their mother, who remains weak after delivery.
Rasasi appealed for support from well-wishers and humanitarian organisations, saying the situation had become increasingly difficult as the household now has ten children.
His wife, Mariam Steven, also expressed gratitude to medical staff at Yambio State Hospital, saying she survived the delivery only after complications that caused heavy blood loss.
“I thank God for saving me and the doctors at Yambio State Hospital. After delivery, I had complications and lost a lot of blood. People had to donate blood to save my life,” she said.
“We already had seven children, and now we have ten. Life is very hard because we are poor.”
Dr. Konjo Samuel, the medical director of Yambio State Hospital, said the mother developed postpartum haemorrhage shortly after delivering the triplets, requiring an emergency blood transfusion.
“In March 2026, we successfully delivered a mother of triplets through normal delivery. Shortly after labour, she developed postpartum haemorrhage and required urgent blood transfusion,” he said.
He said the hospital relied on family donors due to shortages in its blood bank.
“At that moment, we relied on family donors and managed to secure a few units of blood that helped stabilise her condition. This situation exposed a major gap in our services,” he said.
Dr. Konjo called for increased voluntary blood donation to strengthen emergency response capacity.
“We strongly encourage community members to donate blood voluntarily so that we are better prepared to save lives in future emergencies,” he said.
The family is now appealing for food and basic support for the newborns, saying their survival depends on assistance from well-wishers.
