Unity State bans dangerous alcohol and drugs

The authorities in Unity State have banned the importation, production, and sale of alcoholic spirits, considered toxic, and other harmful drugs in the state.

The decision was reached after the recent arrival of Governor Dr. Joseph Nguen Monytuil in the state capital, Bentiu. President Salva Kiir reappointed Dr. Nguen as governor in March, replacing Riek Bim Top.

Captain John Malieth, the Unity State police spokesperson, told Radio Tamazuj on Saturday that the ban follows reports of several deaths related to alcohol and drug abuse. He urged all companies and individuals to respect the directive, warning that violators will be punishable by law.

“All the factories, companies, and local producers are urged to comply with the new orders; any violation will result in legal action and subsequent imprisonment,” he stated. “The decision comes at a time when the state is witnessing an increase in the consumption of toxic alcohol, contributing to a rise in crime rates.”

“The governor said the ban aims to protect residents, particularly youth, from the dangerous impacts of alcoholism and drug addiction,” Captain Malieth added.

In addition to the toxic spirits, the order also bans the sale of Tramadol, a synthetic opioid pain medication used to treat moderate to severe acute or chronic pain. Although tramadol is a “weak” opioid, it is frequently abused because it produces a euphoric high, provides a significant energy boost for physically demanding labor, and is often perceived as “safer” than harder drugs.

Kai Gai, a Unity State resident, welcomed the ban, saying it will save youth across the state. He urged the youth to focus on their studies and productive activities.

“We appreciate the government for banning the sale of alcohol and the drug known as Tramadol,” he said.

Last week, the security forces began a crackdown on the banned alcoholic spirits and drugs.
