U.S Govt discourages citizens’ travel to South Sudan over Ebola

The U.S Department of State on Tuesday put out a travel advisory strongly urging Americans not to travel to South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), or Uganda for any reason and to reconsider travel to Rwanda due to the Ebola Bundibugyo Virus disease outbreak in the region.

“The Department has updated its Travel Advisories for the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Rwanda, South Sudan, and Uganda to reflect the elevated health risk due to the outbreak,” the advisory reads. “The Travel Advisory levels for the DRC, South Sudan, and Uganda are Level 4 – Do Not Travel, and the Travel Advisory level for Rwanda is Level 3 – Reconsider Travel.  This replaces previous Travel Advisories issued for the DRC (previously Level 3), South Sudan (previously Level 4), Uganda (previously Level 3), and Rwanda (previously Level 2).”

An earlier State Department Travel Advisory for South Sudan issued on 17 May explicitly advised Americans not to travel to South Sudan for any reason.

“Do not travel to South Sudan due to risk of unrest, crime, kidnapping, landmines, and health risks,” the advisory stated
