Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday, on behalf of the United States of America, extended congratulations to the people of South Sudan as they commemorate the 15th anniversary of independence.

A press release from the U.S. Department of State said the United States’ support for the South Sudanese people began decades before independence in 2011.

“In partnership with religious organizations, civil society groups, and other grass roots movements, the United States has sought to promote a peaceful and prosperous future for the South Sudanese people,” the statement reads. “The United States looks forward to continuing our work with the people of South Sudan to build a future that benefits both our nations.”
