The spokesperson of the traffic police in Western Bahr el Ghazal State said two people died in separate vehicular accidents in Wau Town on Wednesday due to speeding.
Captain Ring John Chol told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that the first accident took place in the Daraja area when a car leaving a hotel knocked a fence, which then collapsed on a young man who was sitting nearby, killing him immediately.
He said the second accident involved the collision of two motorbikes, one traveling from Bilpam to Wau South, and the other heading from Wau South to Atido.
“The first accident happened in Daraja when a car within the hotel was leaving and hit the fence, and a young man was sitting nearby who died on the spot when the fence fell on him,” he said. “The accident occurred because the driver was not focusing, and the accident was due to negligence.”
“The second accident involved two motorbikes, one of which was coming to the town and the other from Wau South to Atido, and they collided near Wau Airport,” Capt. Ring added.
He urged drivers and motorcyclists to refrain from speeding and to observe the recommended speed limit of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour within the town and 60 to 80 kilometers per hour on highways.
Speeding and negligence continue to be among the leading causes of road accidents in South Sudan and around the world. According to traffic personnel, driving beyond the recommended speed limits reduces a driver’s reaction time, increases the impact of collisions, and often results in the tragic loss of lives and property.
