Two killed in Nyirol cattle raid, official says

Two people have been killed and three injured in a cattle raid in Jonglei State, a local official has said.

The attack took place on Thursday afternoon in Wunbil village, Nyirol county, according to Peter Gatkuoth Koang, the county commissioner.

Koang, who was appointed by the opposition group SPLM-IO, told Radio Tamazuj on Friday that assailants from the neighbouring Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) were responsible.

He stated that 150 cattle were stolen but were later recovered.

Koang condemned the violence, warning that the security situation in the county had been “dire” in recent weeks and urging restraint.

Cattle raids are a common source of conflict in the region, often leading to cycles of retaliatory violence.

However, the GPAA has denied any involvement.

The area’s Information Minister, Jacob Werchum Jouk, told Radio Tamazuj that they were not aware of the attack and had not been officially informed by authorities in Jonglei State.
