Large crowds took to the streets of Nyala on Thursday in a rally celebrating what organisers described as improved security and stability in the city.
Nyala is the capital and seat of Sudan’s RSF-backed Government of Peace and Unity, a parallel administration established by the Sudan Founding Alliance, known as TASIS. The alliance includes the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) led by Gen. Abdel-Aziz al-Hilu.
Mohamed Hassan Al-Taishi, prime minister of the administration, said it was ready to join any peace process aimed at ending the war, provided that it results in a just settlement and addresses what he called decades of marginalization.
Al-Taishi praised students, civil society groups and other participants, as well as the RSF and SPLM-N, which he described as the “Founding Forces”.
He said recovery is progressing in Nyala, El Geneina, Zalingei, El Daein and El Fula, and that schools in the five cities were ready to reopen.
Abida Mukhtar, head of the Women’s Movement for Change, told Radio Tamazuj that the rally, held under the slogan “A Million People for Recovery”, brought together residents from Nyala and surrounding communities.
Sudan’s war began in April 2023 after a power struggle between the army and the RSF erupted into fighting, derailing a planned transition to civilian rule. The RSF now controls much of western Sudan, including Darfur, while the army controls most of the north and east.
The conflict has killed and displaced large numbers of people and created a major humanitarian crisis.
