The Sudanese Journalists’ Syndicate has called on Egyptian authorities to immediately release Sudanese journalist Attaf Mohamed Mokhtar, who has been detained in Cairo since Tuesday.
Mokhtar, editor-in-chief of Al-Sudani newspaper and website, was arrested at his residence in the Egyptian capital early on 8 September, according to the syndicate.
The syndicate said his family and colleagues had not been informed of the reasons for his detention or given sufficient information about his whereabouts.
In a statement on Saturday, it called on the Egyptian authorities to clarify Mokhtar’s legal status and explain the reasons for his continued detention. It also urged them to allow him to communicate with his family and lawyer in accordance with Egyptian law.
The syndicate said it had been in contact with relevant authorities in Egypt since learning of his detention and was continuing efforts to secure his release.
Mokhtar moved to Egypt after fleeing Sudan following the outbreak of war between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023.
He has been critical of the United Arab Emirates’ alleged support for the RSF. The UAE has denied allegations that it provides military support to the group.
The syndicate said it respects Egyptian law but urged the authorities to resolve the case and release Mokhtar so that he could return to his family.
Egyptian officials could not immediately be reached for comment.
