South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday fired the governor of the Bank of South Sudan, Johnny Ohisa Domian, as the country grapples with soaring inflation and a worsening economic crisis.
Kiir replaced Domian with the bank’s first deputy governor, Addis Ababa Othow, according to a decree broadcast on state-run media.
No reason was given for the dismissal of the central bank governor, but the country has faced severe cash shortages in local currency, and government employees have gone unpaid for months.
Othow had served as first deputy governor since February 2025 before his appointment as the new bank governor.
In a separate decree, Samuel Yanga Mikaya, who previously served as first deputy governor from October 2023 to December 2024, was reappointed to the position.
The South Sudanese leader also replaced the general manager of the state electricity corporation, appointing Joseph Awur Ajak in place of Bech Awan Deng, who was reassigned as a technical adviser at the Ministry of Energy and Dams.
South Sudan’s economy has struggled in recent years due to political instability and disruptions in oil production, its main revenue source, partly caused by the ongoing war in neighboring Sudan.
